Raise the roof in an exhibition organised by the Royal Institute for British Architects, which took an introspective look at the institution’s colonial history and the remaining evidence within its building. Our creative approach drew inspiration from the practice of patchwork making and weaving different perspectives together. Patchworking practices have existed in a lot of different cultures throughout history and tend to come from a scarcity of means. Our typographical approach aimed to patchwork and fuse various fonts crafted by under-represented type designers together as a representation of the unity in struggles. Our hybrid font was based on Mizan, Min Sans, Squil and Halyard. Together, they form a new specimen, a new canon. Our intention with this design approach was to create a tapestry that celebrates diversity and represents and welcomes new cannons.
This exhibition was created in honour of the visionary Lesley Lokko, who received the RIBA Gold Medal.
