Richard Batterham

Victoria & Albert Museum

We were commissioned to design the retrospective exhibition of Richard Batterham’s pottery at the Victoria and Albert Museum, in collaboration with EBBA Architects. Central to our approach was the significance of Batterham’s studio, which was inseparable from his practice as a potter. We brought elements of this environment into the gallery: the custom title typeface was inspired by the hand-engraved lettering on his studio sign, while the warm tones, textures, and materials throughout the space echoed details of his workshop. Together, these choices created a setting that allowed his vessels to feel at home, resulting in a sensitive homage and celebration of his lifelong studio practice.
